Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's move to seek the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's consent and declare a nationwide emergency is an indirect admission that the Bersatu president has lost his majority support in Parliament, Padang Rengas MP Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said.
At a press conference held at the Umno headquarters, Nazri, who announced his withdrawal of support for Muhyiddin and the government, said the prime minister made similar moves when he sought emergency declarations to postpone three previous by-elections.
"We have seen that when there is no majority, he (Muhyiddin) must call for a general election, but we know it cannot be done in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic.
"I likened what he did (today) to the (previous emergency declarations for the) Batu Sapi and Grik by-elections," he said.
Nazri said that at the time, the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government sought to declare an emergency in order to stop the by-elections.
"Same thing here. Now when (PN) lost the majority, they have to hold a general election.
"When he sought consent for an emergency declaration, that means he is admitting defeat and that he no longer holds a majority," Nazri added.
Also present at the press conference was Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, who is also Umno's election director.
With Muhyiddin's "admission", Nazri said the general election must be called as soon the pandemic is under control.
To a question, Nazri described the emergency declaration as a "political emergency", rather than a public health crisis, as the latter can be addressed through a nationwide movement control order.
"So it means it can be read that... this is a political emergency to avoid the general election," he said.
